Word artist in residence bij Rataplan!
Rataplan biedt vier muzikale residenties aan waar ontwikkeling, experiment, uitwisseling en presentatie centraal staan.
Residenties zijn mogelijk vanaf midden september 2026 tot en met begin juni 2027, waarvan 5 dagen worden vergoed en ondersteund op maat. De residentieweek wordt in onderling overleg ingepland.

1. Wie kan zich kandidaat stellen?
Aanstormend, muzikaal, professioneel talent dat zich op een eigenzinnige manier tot jazz verhoudt. Ook mid-careers die intergenerationeel samenwerken rond een verrassend en avontuurlijk project dat de jazzscene verrijkt.

- Je praktijk vertrekt vanuit jazz en kan versterkt worden door andere kunstvormen. Dat kunnen andere muziekgenres zijn, ontmoetingen met performance (theater, slam poetry, dans,…), beeldende/audiovisuele kunst. Ook voorstellen gericht op een jong publiek komen in aanmerking.
- Je bent een opkomend, professioneel en avontuurlijk talent met een vastberaden toekomstperspectief. Of je bent al een tijdje bezig en je broedt op een vernieuwend project. Je hebt aandacht voor verschillende klanken en representatie in je band.
- De residentie stelt artistieke ontwikkeling centraal. Het maakt geen deel uit van een academische onderzoeksstudie, afwerking van een plaat of repetities richting een release.
- Je maakt deel uit van de broedplaats van Rataplan: je gaat in dialoog met de andere residenten, deelt expertise en bent aanwezig tijdens andere toonmomenten. Je bent geïnteresseerd en staat open voor samenwerking met Rataplan. Dit is een extra engagement als artist in residence dat je opneemt.
- Je hebt affiniteit met jazz in verbinding met de grootstedelijke context. Je hoort de klanken van de stad in je muziek.
2. Wat biedt Rataplan?
Rataplan ondersteunt je op volgende vlakken:
- Ruimte: gedurende 5 dagen kan je (of je band/collectief) gebruik maken van onze concertzaal als residentieruimte. Deze is uitgerust met een podium, een PA, uitstekende akoestiek en een basispakket aan technische voorzieningen. Deze 5-daagse is vergoed. Daarnaast is er gratis extra repetitieruimte mogelijk op basis van beschikbaarheid van onze zaal.
- Omkadering: je kan beroep doen op het team van Rataplan als klankbord op artistiek, zakelijk en communicatief vlak. Verder word je ook ondersteund door een technische en productionele medewerker die de residentie in goede banen leidt.
- Budget: Er wordt een vergoeding voorzien van €200 per artiest per dag, met een maximum van 4 artiesten. Als de bezetting groter is, wordt in onderling overleg een billijke gage voorzien. Buiten muzikanten, kan deze vergoeding ook worden ingezet voor het betrekken van andere artiesten (scenograaf, dramaturg, coach, …). Als je je bedrag wenst te verhogen, kan je zelf beroep doen op aanvullende subsidies of fondsen. Rataplan kan je hierin adviseren.
- Continuïteit: Rataplan zoekt naar verbindingskansen uit en rond de kunstensector die jou op de goede weg helpen om na de residentie verder te kunnen groeien.
- Je maakt mee deel uit van de Rataplan community: je voedt mee de werking en je kan zelf voorstellen doen, programma co-cureren, kunsteducatieve workshops geven, presenteren, inspireren ... Je krijgt mee de sleutel van ons huis.
- Één residentie uit deze selectie mondt uit in een samenwerking met Werkplaats Walter in Brussel.
3. Wat wordt er van jou als artiest verwacht?
- Eerst en vooral een boeiende residentie, waarin je je artistieke verhaal of nieuw muzikaal werk ontwikkelt.
- De residentieperiode wordt afgesloten met een volwaardig toonmoment in Rataplan. Samen met Rataplan denk je mee na over publiek en omkadering. Je communiceert mee naar eigen netwerken.
- Je project heeft de ambitie om de komende jaren in de voorgestelde bezetting te blijven bestaan en aan een (inter)nationale carrière te bouwen. Je beschikt over de nodige professionaliteit.
- Om de 2 maanden ontmoet je de andere residenten en ga je in gesprek over elkaars residentie. Zo bouwen we aan een gemeenschappelijk netwerk en delen we elkaars praktijk. Je bent geïnteresseerd in de toonmomenten van de andere residenten en nieuwsgierig naar de bredere werking van Rataplan.
4. Hoe gebeurt de selectie?
- Rataplan stelt een longlist van 10 artiesten samen uit de kandidaturen en stelt deze voor aan een externe jury. De jury bestaat uit externe muziekpartners en artiesten.
- De jury kiest 4 artiesten/collectieven uit de longlist.
- Begin maart verneem je of je al dan niet geselecteerd bent. Geselecteerde kandidaten ontmoeten we graag voor een kennismakingsgesprek.
- Uiteraard zijn inclusie en diversiteit in geslacht, etniciteit, leeftijd, ... belangrijke parameters in het selectie- en evaluatieproces.

Naast het Artist in Residence-traject faciliteert Rataplan doorheen het jaar ook repetitieruimte voor opkomend, professioneel en avontuurlijk muziektalent (al dan niet met een hart voor het jonge publiek). Open call: become Artist in Residence at Rataplan
Rataplan is a music hub, a home for jazz, with a stage, a shared breeding ground and a broad, intergenerational community.
Each season, we offer four musical residencies that focus on development, experimentation, exchange and presentation.
Is this your season as the Artist in Residence for the 2026–2027?
Rataplan is looking for musical talent with a unique approach to jazz. Residencies are available from mid-September 2026 to early June 2027, with five days of financial compensation and tailored support. The residency week will be planned in mutual consultation.

1. Who can apply?
Up-and-coming, musical, professional talent with a unique approach to jazz. Mid-career musicians who collaborate across generations on surprising and adventurous projects that enrich the jazz scene.
Musicians or collectives with projects that meet the following criteria:
- Your practice is based on jazz and can be enhanced by other art forms. These can be other music genres, encounters with performance (theatre, slam poetry, dance, etc.), visual/audiovisual art. Proposals aimed at a young audience are also eligible.
- You are an emerging, professional and adventurous musician with a determined outlook on the future. Or you have been active for some time and are working on an innovative project. You pay attention to a variety of sounds and representation in your band.
- The residency focuses on artistic development. It is not part of an academic research study, the completion of an album or rehearsals for a release.
- You will be part of the Rataplan breeding ground: you will engage in dialogue with the other residents, share expertise and be present during other performances. You are interested and open to collaboration with Rataplan. This is an additional commitment that you take on as an artist in residence.
- You have an affinity with jazz in connection with the metropolitan context. Your music reflects the urban soundscape.
2. What does Rataplan offer?
Rataplan supports you in the following areas:
- Space: for five days, you (or your band/collective) can use our concert hall as a residency space. It is equipped with a stage, a PA system, excellent acoustics and a basic package of technical facilities. This five-day residency is paid. In addition, free extra rehearsal space is available based on the availability of our hall.
- Support: you can call on the Rataplan team as a sounding board for artistic, business and communication matters. You will also be supported by a technical and production assistant who will ensure that the residency runs smoothly.
- Budget: A fee of €200 per artist per day is provided, with a maximum of four artists. If there are more artists, a fair fee will be agreed upon in mutual consultation. In addition to musicians, this fee can also be used to engage other artists (set designer, dramaturg, coach, etc.). If you wish to increase your budget, you can apply for additional subsidies or funds yourself. Rataplan can advise you on this.
- Continuity: Rataplan seeks opportunities for connections in and around the arts designed to support your continued growth after the residency.
- You will be part of the Rataplan community: you will be able to contribute to its activities. You can make your own proposals, co-curate programs, give art education workshops, present, inspire, etc. You will be given the key to our house.
- One residency from this selection will result in a collaboration with Werkplaats Walter in Brussels.
3. What is expected of you as an artist?
- First and foremost, an engaging residency in which you develop your artistic narrative or new musical work.
- The residency period will conclude with a full-fledged performance at Rataplan. In collaboration with Rataplan, you will help shape ideas about the audience you aim to engage and the overall framework
- Your project has the ambition to continue in its proposed form in the coming years and to build a national or international career. You possess the necessary professionalism.
- Every two months, you will meet the other residents and discuss each other's residencies. This allows us to build a shared network and share our practices. You are interested in the other residents' performances and curious about Rataplan's broader activities.
4. How is the selection made?
- Rataplan compiles a longlist of 10 artists from the applications and submits it to an external jury. The jury consists of external music partners and artists.
- The jury selects 4 artists/collectives from the longlist.
- At the beginning of March, you will be notified whether or not you have been selected. We would like to meet selected candidates for an introductory interview.
- Of course, inclusion and diversity in terms of gender, ethnicity, age, etc. are important parameters in the selection and evaluation process.
